Traits Needed To Get Voice Over Jobs In Chicago
Before I give you what I believe to be the critical characteristics of a successful voice over artist, let me dispel a common myth.
The myth is that you have to be the best at voice overs to be successful. That line of thinking is often applied to most any type of endeavor. If I’m not the best, I can’t be successful! (Insert loud buzzer sound) WRONG! Don’t misunderstand me here.
Incompetency and success are rarely observed in the same person however the opposite is very often true. How often it is that we see a highly skilled and talented individual that just doesn’t live up to their potential! My point is simply this: if you have desire, never count yourself out before you start.
Get Voice Over Jobs In Chicago – My 5 Characteristics Checklist
I believe there are 5 critical characteristics necessary to record voice overs for a living.
ABILITY – Can you read well? Do you have a good grasp of your native language? Are you articulate? If so…great start! If not, that’s a good place to begin working with a voice over coach. For the purpose of this blog I won’t get into particulars but it begins by getting a professional assessment of where your ability is now and developing a plan to make you a marketable talent.
TEACHABLE – If you’re not teachable you won’t progress in any endeavor, whether it be voice overs or something else. Clients, directors, and casting folk like to work with people who follow direction and are teachable/directable.
BUSINESS SKILLS – Talent alone won’t cut it in most instances. The often overlooked aspects of marketing and sales are as vital an ingredient as talent. I don’t care how good you are. If no one knows about it, you don’t work.
GRIT – As appealing as the idea of recording voice overs is, the reality of it all requires a lot of hard work. Talent development, networking, marketing, and customer service are the “trench work” that make the fun part of the job possible.
STAMINA – Most people don’t make it through “the dip” (see Seth Godin’s “The Dip”). I’ve run a few marathons and I can tell you from experience that establishing a voice over career is far more relatable to running a marathon than sprinting for 40 yards. Remember Rudy Rudiger? (from the movie Rudy. then you get the idea)
I wish the acronym formed some cool, catchy, and memorable word but I guess you’ll just have to do your best to work with ATBGS!
